Pneumonia Vaccine Prevnar 13® Recommended for Those 65+
Thunderbird IM now offers Prevnar 13® (also called PCV13) which, taken in conjunction with PPSV23, is highly effective in preventing pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive disease in adults age 65 and older.
Research showed that while PPSV23 was effective in preventing certain types of pneumonia, the addition of PCV13 offers broader protection. This research led the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to recommend that those age 65+ take both PCV13 and PPSV23 in series.
Streptococcus pneumonia is a leading infectious cause of serious illness, including bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia, among older adults in the United States.
Often mistaken for a cold or the flu, pneumonia symptoms can appear quickly and be severe. They can include chest pain with breathing and coughing; high fever, shakes, chills and sweating; fatigue and cough with phlegm that gets worse.
Prevnar 13® is covered by Medicare Part B with $0 out-of-pocket cost.
